The story behind kumbh mela :

A long time ago, the gods and the demons fought for control of the universe. The gods were losing, they went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu suggested that they churn the ocean to get the nectar of immortality (called Amrit) that would make them powerful and immortal.

The gods and demons worked together to churn the ocean using a huge mountain as a stick and a giant snake as the rope. During the churning, many treasures came out of the ocean, but the most important was the Amrit. Both the gods and demons wanted to drink it, but Lord Vishnu, in the form of a beautiful woman named Mohini, tricked the demons and gave the nectar to the gods. While they were fighting over the nectar, a few drops of Amrit fell to the ground at four places on Earth: Prayagraj (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik. These places became sacred, and it is believed that bathing in the rivers at these spots will purify a person’s soul.
